Science has Revolutionized the World :: essays research papers

Science may be described as the key to the prevailing mode of life in a so-called developed community. We revel on the idea that we are living in a modernized world which has been given a new look and shape due to science. Science has in fact transformed the world into one of wonders and blessings as well as one of deceit and curse! The wonder of science which is dominating the work-place today and which is powered by another boom of science, electricity is none other than the machine. Today more and more work are being performed by machines. Machines are the key to success in various fields. As a result, this is increasing the production rate which in turn is enabling many business to flourish. With the advent of machines, people are getting more time to pursue their hobbies, among which watching television occupies an important place. Television serves as a means of entertainment. Switching off from daily routinization, the husband can watch live matches available through the satellite while the wife can enjoy watching her favorite soap-operas, resting assured that her household chores are being done by the washing machine or dishwasher. Actually, machines have freed people from performing dull drudgeries and have make life less arduous. In the past, the lady was more healthy as she was not assisted by any electric appliance, she used to cook on the hearth. She had to bring bundle of woods from the neighbouring. In that way she used to entertain the beauty of nature. While chopping the wood at her place, she was doing some physical exercise. But it is a pity to note that a modern lady depends on gaseous stove and rice cooker. The electric washing machine washes her clothes. The electric grinder powders the spices and the electric juicer mixes juices. Owing to absolute reliance on those household appliances, she tends to become bulky, inactive and even look diseased. She hardly entertains a long and happy life. Radio plays a significant role in the context of entertainment.

Lupu Bridge

There are five phases in constructing the Lupu Bridge. First is the foundations. When we talk about foundation it is the lower part that carry all the loads of the structures. The condition of the ground on either side of the Huangpu River are not appropriate for the large thrusts made by an arch bridge. Even though its arch is tied, and the use of reducing the forces transferred to the foundations, its total vertical force is still too much. And also the result of the arch being tied is that the parts of the foundations should be able to remain strong against the force. Since Lupu is located in Shanghai, and the fact that it is located near a river, it has soft soil. Therefore the most suitable option is piled foundations for that reason. Its foundations is composed of 118, 900mm diameter steel tubes ,and each pile is about 65m in length. The larger surface area of the piles and long length mean that they could be friction rather than bearing piles. This is assuming that the soil consists of clay nearer the surface moving into stiffer clay then sand lower down. The pier cap of the main span foundation is 3.5m thick and the one that connect the caps at about 51m centres are the crossbeams.. This connection between the two pier caps will help to somewhat relieve the stresses in the soil in the horizontal direction and reduce the amount of deflection incurred. By the use of 700mm diameter soil-cement stirring piles, the strength of the foundation was strengthened to help resist the horizontal force and limit the displacement due to this force. Each of these stirring piles is connected to each other to improve the integrity of the system. During construction, the foundations have a large number and stirring piles addtion due to working loads of the bridge and also due to the loads imparted on the foundations. Above each abutment the large temporary tower was built during construction. Because of that there will probably be the largest vertical force they will feel and these will impart very large vertical forces into the foundations. With the use of horizontal force impart by the inclined arches, the abutment and foundations must be strengthened in the horizontal. At an inclination similar to arches the abutment would have a high level of prestress in the concrete section and there would also be a piles coming from the abutment.

Hetaira, the Greek Courtesans

Hetaira—or  hetaera—is the ancient Greek word for a type of highly skilled prostitute or courtesan. The daughters and wives of Athenian citizens were sheltered from men and most serious education at least partly in order to assure their suitability as citizen wives. Adult female companionship at drinking parties (the famous symposium) could be supplied by a high priced prostitute—or hetaira. Such women might be accomplished musicians, rich, well-educated, and agreeable companions. Aspasia of Miletus Pericles—one of the most important leaders of his time—had a mistress named Aspasia of Miletus. Due to her status as a  foreigner, she may have been doomed to become a hetaira. At the time, those who were not native citizens of Athens were unable to marry Athenian citizens. Her life was likely the richer for it, however. Erotic Entertainers Other hetairai (hetairai is a plural form of hetaira) provided funds for civic improvements. According to an article from the Perseus Digital Library titled,  The Representation Of Prostitutes Versus Respectable Women On Ancient Greek Vases: These women were essentially sexual entertainers and often had artistic skills. Hetairai had physical beauty but also had intellectual training and possessed artistic talents; attributes that made them more entertaining companions to Athenian men at parties than their legitimate wives.—Perseus Digital Library Daughters of Demeter  on  Hetaira According to Daughters of Demeter, women in Athens, though not trained in athletics, seem nevertheless to have had opportunities for sport and exercise. They go on to say  that the wealthy learned to read and gathered in private homes to share music and poetry.
